What online dating taught me about life, dating and, oh yeah, myself

This is one of my favorite topics when I speak to groups. You see – I thought I knew myself pretty well. And then I started dating. And was astounded at all the new things I discovered.

I learned the important things I do want. For example, I found out I want someone who:

Is kind to me and the other people in his life.

Makes me laugh, and laughs at my jokes.

Listens to me when I talk (even when he doesn’t understand everything I say).

Has had good friends for a long time.

I learned the important things I don’t want. For example, I don’t want someone who:

Has a volatile temper.

Doesn’t care about his family and friends.

Makes commitments and doesn’t keep them.

Isn’t willing to admit he was mistaken about something.

What have you learned from your past dates?

How would it feel to turn the negative things you’ve learned into positive results for your future dates?
