More on the subject of holiday traditions

Last week I talked about finding other options when you aren’t able to be a part of your “usual holiday tradition.”

This week, let’s talk about the challenges that come up for couples celebrating special occasions (birthdays, holidays, etc.) Because each person comes out of different traditions — different expectations get set for what will and won’t happen around the celebration. (This isn’t about religious differences, although that would be a great discussion for another day.)

What are you doing for Christmas? New Year’s Eve? New Year’s Day?

A single friend of mine was telling me yesterday that she didn’t know what she was going to do for Christmas. For a variety of reasons she’s on her own this year and, being that this is an unusual situation for her, she was short on options.

She mentioned she might spend part of the day meditating, something that is personally fulfilling for her. However, her tone of voice led me to believe it would feel very solitary if that was her only option.
